Heard a loud bang from the garage and now the door won't lift? That's almost always a broken spring. We replace it the same day most days.
Springs do the heavy lifting, not the opener. A typical two-car door weighs 150 pounds or more, and the springs balance that weight every time the door moves. Standard springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles. Open and close the door four times a day and that's roughly seven years.
Cold, damp weather and rust shorten that life, which is why we see more broken springs in the fall and winter here in the Northwest.
Torsion springs sit on a bar above the door and twist to lift it. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch. Both types break, and both are under serious tension.
When one spring of a pair breaks, we recommend replacing both. The other one has done the same number of cycles and usually goes soon after. Two springs at once also costs less than two separate visits.
Spring tension is the most dangerous part of a garage door. Winding bars slip, cones crack, and people get hurt every year. If your spring is broken, leave the door closed, unplug the opener if it keeps trying, and call us.
We match the springs to your door's weight and size, replace worn cables or bearings if they need it, lubricate the moving parts, balance the door so it stays put halfway up, and test the opener's force and safety sensors.
Tell us what the door or gate is doing. A photo helps.
A technician checks it on site and tells you the options and the cost.
We do the work, then run the door or gate and check the safety sensors before we leave.
We cover the Seattle and Portland areas and the towns around them.
Look above the door. A torsion spring that's broken has a visible gap of a couple of inches. The door also feels very heavy, opens only a few inches, or the opener strains and stops.
We don't recommend it. If you must get a car out, call us first and we'll talk you through whether it's safe.
Yes. Higher-cycle springs cost a little more and last two to three times longer. We'll give you both prices.
Send the form and we’ll call you back. In a hurry? Calling is faster.
